Unable to log in to webmail?

Microsoft sent out an automatic update on 10/9/2007 that has caused a lot of problems for Internet Explorer 7 users.

The update is supposed to be a slight increase in security, but it means that users are suddenly and inexplicably unable to log in to private user areas that they've been happily logging into for years. Webmail is a common problem, which requires the use of third-party cookies. Microsoft's update now automatically blocks these cookies by default.

If, after logging in, you get an error message that says "you must be logged in" or similar, then try the following steps to unblock yourself. You only need to take these steps once:

  1. In Internet Explorer 7, open Tools > Internet Options.
  2. Click the Privacy tab.
  3. Click the Advanced button.
  4. Check the box that says "Override automatic cookie handling" and press OK.
  5. Click OK to exit the Internet Options.

This allows cookies once more, and you should be able to log in as before.
